I was writing my senior thesis for one of my classes. While it was not a law class, it was a class about morals and western beliefs. My paper made a lot of opinions that needed to be backed up by something. I went looking through the civil court records in hopes of finding some civil court rulings on some the the issues I had raised in my paper. My older brother told me that was a good way to defend my opinions in the paper and that it was like foot noting something. General Ahmad Yani (1922-1965) was a commander of the Indonesian Army, Who was murdered by members of the 30  September Movement.He grew up in central Java and after secondary school joined the military serving under the Dutch and then the Javanese. After Independence Yani joined the Army of the fledgling republic and fought against the Dutch. He was widely regarded as a brave, resourceful and dedic ated soldier. The then President, Sukarno, moved closer to the Indonesian Communist Party in the early 1960s. Yani and fellow soldier Nassution opposed Sukarno in this and refused to be involved in the formation of a “fifth force” in addition to the three armed services and the police.

On 1 October 1965 members of the so-called 30 September Movement- to this day a shadowy organization whose backing and motivations are still debated-attempted to detain a number of generals known to be opposed to the setting up of the “fifth force.”Yani was shot dead when he resisted arrest and his Body and that of other generals was thrown down a well near an air force base in jakarta.It was this incident which triggered a coup by Suharto who proclaimen himself president,a position he held for the next 33 years.

In the aftermath of these events,there was an Indonesian –wide convulsion of bloodletting proportions as members of the communist party –and many completely innocent people of people who died at this time range from 78,000 (universraly ridiculed) to I million (regarded by many observers as just as exaggerated as the lesser number). Jalan Ahmad Yani in Denpasar is the continuation of Jalan Kartini. There are also important streets bearing the general’s name in Negara,Amlapura and Singaraja.
