Save Money On Gas And Still Go Camping In Style
With the high price of gasoline these days, a lot of people are thinking twice before they hit the road with their Class A Motorhome, 5th wheel, or travel trailer because of how expensive it is to drive or tow them. It’s not that unusual to get less than 10 miles per gallon.
However, with a popup camper you don’t take as big of a hit in the miles per gallon department. We have owned a popup camper for 6 years and tow it with a Ford Explorer. Our gas mileage consistently goes down about 1 mile per gallon when we are towing in optimal conditions (fairly flat roads and little to no wind) and about 2 miles per gallon when we are traveling to a campground in a hilly area or when it’s windy; which for us translates to about 17 miles per gallon in hilly or windy conditions and 18 miles per gallon in optimal conditions.
While that is still low gas mileage compared to some vehicles; that is decent mileage for towing a popup camper. For our family, it means we can afford to take our popup camper to a campground a couple times a month in the summer and have a great time enjoying the outdoors.
